Over 400,000 people entered the ballot for the 2019 London Marathon. I was one of them – I filled out the application on my phone in Edinburgh airport, waiting for a delayed flight to Lerwick. I didn’t get a place, just like I haven’t for the last three years, but I did get a nice training jacket.
The less well-known route to a place is through British Athletics. My club, Glasgow FrontRunners, is allocated one place and there is a ballot of interested members, with vastly improved odds on the main ballot.
I put my name in, and my name was drawn.
I’d already entered the Edinburgh marathon, taking place at the end of May – how hard can running two marathons be? Plenty do it. Plenty do much, much more. I’d been thinking over training plans since signing up for Edinburgh in October 2018, & it seemed easy enough to just bring everything forward four weeks in preparation for 28 April 2019.
Let’s see how I get on.
